On the go

otg-copy

When I first moved to the city, I often wondered, how could I still retain some semblance of style while also being able to maneuver the increased walking and bipolar weather conditions.  I remember for the first 6 months I really thought I could wear heels almost everywhere and actually believed the weather report on the morning news. (Insert wide-eyed emoji here).

Fast forward a couple years and here’s what I’ve learned. Flats can be your friend.  Yes this was tough for me to conceptualize, but after a week of non stop heels and realizing no amount of reflexology would help, I made peace with flats and found styles that made my feet feel just as special as my Manolo heels did. These Gucci mule loafers are one of my favorites with their mix of classic and edgy.  They are comfy as hell and have serious staying power.

I also had to take stock of my handbag collection as well. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good cross body mini bag, but if you’re out and about in the city, something a little larger is required; preferably to fit a pair of heels and umbrella. I opted for the Celine trapeze.  The medium size is perfect and the shoulder strap is great if you prefer that to the crook of your arm.

Neutral territory

neutrals full down b

Always one to hang on to warm weather as long as I can, I am slowly easing into Fall (at least my accessories are).  I’ve always invested in good accessories.  Bags, shoes, sunnies-all are key pieces that if purchased with some thought, can carry you through every season.  I always gravitate towards a version of a neutral as these colors are the way I go with many of my investment pieces.

The warmth of my bag and suede texture my shoes added just the right nod to Fall.

Under the influence

Some of my favorite events are the one’s where I can dress to the nines.  Fancy dresses and sparkly heels definitely make a girl feel special, but sometimes a tee and jeans feels just as glamorous.  I love taking a classic black and white graphic tee (especially one with attitude) and pairing it with an over-sized blazer and bright heels.  It’s an easy twist that elevates the unassuming jeans and tee.

Sunday Stripes

Sunday stripe full 2

Ever since our trip to Paris, I’ve been obsessed with stripes. Admittedly, I already had a fairly large section dedicated to them in my closet, but I can’t help adding new pieces, as they are a perfect neutral without being boring.  There’s something so classic yet so versatile about stripes.  They can take on an entirely new life paired with leather and ripped jeans vs. a girly skirt and sweet flats. Sunday felt like a stripe kinda day.

Lou & Grey

Although New York is growing on me by the day, nothing is better than heading South to my hometown of Raleigh, NC to see friends and family. On my last visit, I stumbled upon a new shopping gem in North Hills-Lou & Grey.  As a member of the Ann Taylor/Loft family, Lou & Grey is the hip, younger sibling that is effortlessly chic with the accessories to match.

Walking through the doors, I feel like I’ve entered a cozy, fabulously curated boutique in NYC.  After being greeted warmly, I start to explore. My first find is a dainty, golden wrap bracelet-perfect for layering or everyday use, followed by an irresistible wide brim hat.  These pieces part of Lou & Grey’s Maker’s collection which are handmade in small quantities by artisans across the country.  The collection is somewhat reminiscent of a cool little market you would stumble across in Brooklyn or San Fran one weekend, full of one of a kind treasures that you know won’t be on everyone.

As I make my way through the store, I thumb through beautiful layers of cashmere, knits, leathers and prints, accompanied by tables of beautiful accessories, books and dainty jewelry.  Stacks of sweaters next to soft, tees in neutral stripes provide the perfect selection of must have basics for any girls closet.  I cannot help but notice the amazing woven leather chair and nature inspired antler stands atop log tables scattered throughout the store as well.  It’s such a unique but welcoming space.

After about an hour of exploring, I left with some amazing, unique finds and a new favorite boutique on my Raleigh list.  Lou & Grey is a must for any girl who loves luxe basics that will work with your current wardrobe or easily stand alone.  I’m already looking forward to my next visit over the holidays!

The Makers

Scattered throughout the store, you will find little cards that highlight”The Makers” collections. These are lines offered exclusively by Lou & Grey of a carefully curated mix of handmade artesian pieces.  Within each collection’s offering, you will find everything from yummy apothecary selections to handmade hats and scarves. Each location stocks different artists.  I was one of my favorite parts of the store.
